The Delmarva Christian volleyball squad got the biggest win of its season Oct. 21, with a 20-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-18 victory over perennial powerhouse Ursuline Academy on Senior Night. The Royals move to 13-1 on the season.
This was a big week for the Royals, as they have now defeated Red Lion Christian Academy, Tatnall School and the Raiders.
The Millaway sisters combined for 46 kills (Elaina 24, Ellie 22) in the match. They also teamed for 19 digs. The setter sisters of Tessa and Maggie Kwiatkowski scored 25 and 21 assists, respectively, with junior sis Maggie bumping 22 digs. Senior Lily Fetterman garnered 25 digs. Evelyn Jensen was in beast mode at the net, scoring seven kills and five blocks. Junior Addy Benjamin and senior Kaylan Yoder teamed for six kills and seven blocks.
“In the beginning when we lost the first set, we said we are not going to lose this match,” said senior Ellie Millaway. “It’s a special night; it’s our Senior Night and we are going to win this. We had to go for everything.”
“It feels really great,” said senior libero Lily Fetterman. “I felt at peace with knowing that if one of us made a mistake, the other teammates were going to pick us up. We fed off our other wins this week because each one of those were important to how we played.”
“These girls are ready to play volleyball,” said Royals head coach Mike Zampini. “They want to win and they’re proving it. They are doing everything they need to do. They are coming back in games; they are finishing games strong. They have definitely bonded as a team. It’s a team effort. The bench has supported the team; the court supports the bench. I feel that every aspect of the game is clicking right now, and we hope it continues.”
“We just worked as a team,” said senior Tessa Kwiatkowski. “Our energy was through the roof.”
“We had to dig deep, and our communication as a team was great,” said senior Evelyn Jensen. “We had to push really hard tonight.”
“It feels really good to beat one of the best teams in the state,” said emotional senior Valencia-Lydel Mbuagbaw. “The momentum of the whole team and the bench and the fans’ energy was fantastic. I’m so proud of every single one of my teammates.”
“We all pulled together and played for each other,“ said senior blocker Kaylan Yoder. “We kept them on their toes with our blocks, and they didn’t know whether they could hit around us or through us. We were aggressive at the net and put the shots down, and I think that’s what did it.”
The Lady Royals travel to Caravel Thursday, Oct. 27, to face the 8-4 Bucs.
