Sussex Academy soccer falls to Milford in rain-drenched match

Bucs remain unbeaten; Seahawks drop to 5-1
September 28, 2023

On a day more suited for ducks, a strong Milford soccer squad used a three-goal second half to down the Seahawks 3-2 in Georgetown. The Bucs move to 6-0, while the Seahawks are 5-1.

Liam Stegall started the scoring for the Seahawks on a penalty kick. Sussex Academy continued in the second half with a tally from Andree Mendoza from Stegall.

Then it was all Bucs, as they had two scores from Thompson Burke with assists from Luke Sollie, then the game winner from Emmanuel Joseph unassisted at the 76-minute mark.

Shots were even at 6-6, with the Seahawks holding a 3-1 edge in penalty corners.

Carter Norton made three saves in the Seahawks’ cage, while Milford’s Nathan Hague stopped four shots.

“I thought we came in prepared for the style of play and physicality Milford has,” said Sussex Academy coach RJ Dina. “We came out strong through 40 minutes, found the back of the net. In the second half, we came out fast and connecting on all cylinders. Once we got that second goal, things seemed to shift. We got too comfortable, and truthfully, we fell apart. Credit to Milford for playing until the final whistle – something we need to take note of moving forward. We will learn from this and grow from moments like these. How we respond against Seaford will be very telling on how we handle adversity moving forward.”

The Seahawks are set to play Seaford Thursday, Sept. 28.
