LYC hosting Sunfish world championships in October

August 23, 2013

Some of the best Sunfish sailors in the world will be racing in Delaware Bay during the first week of October.

Lewes Yacht Club will host the 2013 Sunfish Class World Championship Regatta, a first for the club, Oct. 5 to 11. Nearly 60 sailors, including some from the United States, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, Bermuda and the Bahamas, have registered; the fleet is limited to 72 sailboats. National and international judges will be part of the race committee. Last year the world championships took place in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Regatta Committee Chair Connie Miller, who is an accomplished Sunfish sailor, said the club has been putting in bids for several years to host the prestigious regatta. She said volunteers and motorboats are needed.

In addition, sponsors are needed to help defray some expenses. For more information, contact Miller at constmill@comcast.net.
