Like many of us, Anna Balika hoped to find a career where she could make a difference in people’s lives. In her quest she gained experience in teaching, administration and graphic design, but none quite hit the mark. That was until she learned about Bayhealth’s Earn While You Learn program and found her purpose in health care.
With the help of Bayhealth and Polytech Adult Education, Balika is a Certified Phlebotomy Technician working as a Patient Care Technician I at Bayhealth Outpatient Center, Kent Campus. She’s helping people, and all the while gaining the experience and connections she needs to take her career to new heights.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in health care?
“I’ve always wanted a career where I could make a difference, but none of my previous jobs have brought me that sense of purpose. Now as a phlebotomist, I get to help patients every day and it’s so rewarding. I've never been more satisfied with my profession.”
What have you enjoyed most about the Earn While You Learn program and why?
"The program made it so easy for me to pursue a career in health care while still having a full-time job when I was going to classes and training. I attended classes at night and the fact that Bayhealth paid me to go to class and covered my tuition was a huge plus. Most of all I enjoyed knowing I had a full-time position at Bayhealth when I finished the program.”
Describe the support you’ve received from Bayhealth team members and how it has helped you reach your goals.
“I've always felt so supported by my Bayhealth teammates and leaders. When I first started in my full-time position they were by my side until I felt comfortable on my own, and even now I know I can always go to them for help or with questions. I definitely wouldn’t be the confident patient care tech that I am today without their support.”
What are your future career goals?
"I'm looking forward to earning the Patient Care Technician II title in the near future. Further down the road I'm considering becoming an RN, or perhaps a Certified Play Therapist. I can envision myself working in labor and delivery and even becoming a midwife one day. Whatever road I choose, I’m thankful for the foundation the Earn While You Learn program gave me and I look forward to continuing to make a difference.”
