Update: Biden has returned to Washington, D.C.
Update: President Joe Biden addressed the nation July 13 following the shooting of former President Donald Trump. Soon afterward, he returned to Washington, D.C. According to a updated weekend guidance issued by the White House late July 13, the president will be receive an update on the situation the morning of July 14.
If there’s a noticeable increase in military and security personnel over the next few days in and around the Cape Region, it’s with good reason – President Joe Biden is expected to visit his North Shores home this weekend.
According to the White House Week Ahead Guidance and Press Schedule issued July 7, the president will travel to Detroit, Mich., for a campaign event Friday, July 12. Afterward, he will make his way to his North Shores home.
Arrival and departure details were not included in the guidance. However, the Federal Aviation Administration issued a restricted flight notice Wednesday, July 10, that begins at 8:30 p.m., Friday, July 12, and ends at 10:15 a.m., Monday, July 15.
There’s not too much of a disturbance when the Bidens are in town, but there will be noticeable security measures put in place by the Secret Service. Here’s a list of what can be expected:
- Gordons Pond users could see restrictions. The park’s parking lot is just around the corner from Biden’s home and is used as a landing site for Marine One.
- If Biden decides to drive, motorists on Route 1 should be prepared for delays. By road, there’s really only one way to his house – southbound on Route 1, then through Rehoboth Beach. As the presidential motorcade makes its way south, police and state personnel sit at all intersections blocking traffic.
- The FAA’s temporary flight restrictions limit use of the airspace – including drones – from Dover south to Ocean City, Md., and west to the Maryland border.
- The Coast Guard establishes security zones in the ocean area immediately in front of North Shores beach and in the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal.
The president and first lady Jill Biden don’t do too much when they’re in town, but they occasionally go out to breakfast or dinner. Sometimes they’ll take a bike ride on the Gordons Pond trail. Almost always, he goes to church at St. Edmond Catholic Church in Rehoboth Beach.
