Cox picks up third win
April 14, 2023

The Cape baseball team used six timely hits and steady pitching to defeat Salesianum 4-2 April 14 on Cape’s Chris Short Field. The Vikings move to 6-1.

Senior starter Nick Cox picked up his third win of the season, throwing five strong innings and sitting down five Sallies batters while giving up just two runs. He also helped himself out at the plate, garnering a hit and knocking in an RBI in the second.

“I wasn’t feeling the best today,” said Cox. “But I just worked the inner half and outer half, trying to get them to swing.”

Timmy Hitchcock threw two innings out of the bullpen. He struck out three.

Gage Joseph went 2-for-3 with a double. He knocked in a run in the fifth inning. Lex Wescott and Owen Daminger each drove in a run.

Isaac Terhune had a single. Later, he was hit by a pitch and scored a run.

“It’s great to beat Sallies,” said Terhune. “You just got to go out there and swing the bat and see what happens. I felt that I can’t get down after I struck out the first time at bat. I had to just stay positive and come back and get a hit.”

“Nick battled today,” said Cape coach Ben Evick. “He always battles. He owns it and works hard. Even when he doesn’t have his best stuff, he can be very effective. He’s been coming through for us offensively all year. He had a big hit that put a run across the board. Isaac [Terhune] has stepped up for us in that two hole since we lost Bryan [Fleming]. This is a big win for us.”

The Vikings will play host to 7-2 Sussex Central Thursday, April 20.
