Cape baseball falls to Ravens 3-1
The Sussex Tech baseball team used a big sixth inning to knock Cape from the undefeated ranks with a 3-1 victory April 18 in Georgetown.
A normal Tech-versus-Cape Northern Division knock-down, drag-out game that pit two of the best pitchers in the state in head-to-head competition, Tech’s Jeremy Vest and Cape’s Brad Marks were lights out on the mound through six. Vest threw seven innings giving up three hits, striking out three and walking two. Marks threw six complete innings giving up three runs, allowing two hits, striking out three and walking four.
The Ravens were led by Gavin Hudson and Brock O'Day with one hit each, while the Vikings were led by Isaac Terhune, Jase Mitchell and Lextyn Wescott.
The Ravens were up with one out in the bottom of the sixth when Hudson walked and O’Day singled up the middle. Kobe Tindley reached on an error to load the bases for the Ravens. Zane Adams grounded out to second, which allowed Hudson to score. With two outs O’Day scored on a passed ball, then a score by Tindley to give the Ravens the 3-0 lead.
Cape scored one in the top of the seven, but it wasn’t enough, as the Ravens move to 8-1 with the victory. The Vikings are 10-1.
“I was happy with how we played,” said Cape coach Ben Evick. “We hit a lot of balls hard that went right to them. Brad [Marks] pitched extremely well allowing only one hit and zero earned runs. We couldn’t get anything to fall, and they took advantage of an error to take the lead in the sixth. We battled in the seventh, but could only plate one run.”
The Vikings take on Sussex Central Tuesday, April 23, at Sports at the Beach, while the Ravens take on Caesar Rodney at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington with a 6:30 p.m. game time.
