A warm rain, sideways off the sea, blowing east to west, doused the girls’ lacrosse players on the Champions Stadium pitch March 23.
“The weather was crazy,” said coach Lindsay Underwood of the game between a pair of traditional powerhouses in Cape and Broadneck (Md.).
Cape had possession in a 7-7 game with under two minutes to play. The rain was in Cape’s face. It was a spread yellow delay game as they played for the last shot.
Lefty Lindsay D’Ambrogi found Lulu Rishko for the game-winner with 17 seconds left to seal the 8-7 victory.
The goal was the third for Rishko, while D'Ambrogi notched her fifth assist to go with a first-period goal for a six-point day.
Besides Rishko’s three, Cape saw single goals from D’Ambrogi, Claire Lopez, Haley Gamuciello, Grace Wiggins and Macy Steinwedel.
Lopez and Rishko each had an assist.
Anna Lopez had seven saves in goal.
Broadneck goals were scored by Olivia Orso with three, Cayman Holmes with two, and Sienna Miller and Lily Trout with one apiece.
Cape will play Queen Anne’s County (Md.) at 6:15 p.m., Tuesday, March 26, at Champions Stadium. Cape has a 5-4 advantage over the Lions over the last nine meetings dating back to the 2013 season.
