Fans had colorful umbrellas, the Archmere squad stood under a green canopy and the Tatnall Hornets team was there to see Cape in person. Upset was in the air. If a trap game could happen in the last game of the regular season May 10 along Philadelphia Pike, it would be for 14-0 Cape Henlopen.
Cape led 3-2 with 4:27 remaining in the first quarter. With 1:20 remaining in the first half, the Vikings were running the clock on the Auks 12-2 on the way to a 17-5 victory that clinched a 15-0 unbeaten regular season.
Cape is followed by Tatnall at 14-1, then Caesar Rodney and Smyrna at 12-3. Archmere, Odessa and Sussex Academy all finished 11-4.
“We really didn’t know what to expect playing here at Archmere today,” said coach Lindsey Underwood. “Archmere has some great players; they are well coached and they show up ready to play. Sure, we were aware that Tatnall was here to watch us. I expected their coaches, but not the entire team.”
Cape had nine different players score, and eight of 17 goals were assisted.
Lindsay D’Ambrogi and Macy Steinwedel each had three goals. Two-goal efforts were turned in by Lulu Rishko, Carrie Clausius, Ally Diehl and Haley Gamuciello. Claire Lopez, Grace Wiggins and Mairead Rishko each had a goal.
Lopez had three assists, Clausius had two and D’Ambrogi, Avary Miller and Rishko each had one.
Anna Lopez had eight saves.
Archmere goals were scored by Claudia Koch and Elizebeth DeLuca each with two, and Ciarra Knapp with one. Ellie DiCarlo had 10 saves for Archmere.
