The Cape girls’ lacrosse team roared like a lion March 26 at Champions Stadium, coming out hot on a cold night to post a 7-1 first-quarter crooked number on the Queen Anne’s Lions, then coasting into spring break with a dominating 14-2 victory.
Cape and Queen Anne’s County, two powerhouse public schools on the Eastern Shore, have now played 10 times since 2013, with Cape holding a 6-4 advantage.
Cape has won the last five meetings, while the Lions’ four wins came against the Vikings’ state championship teams in 2013, ‘14, ‘15 and ‘17.
The 14-2 win was the largest margin of victory since the Vikings lost to the Lions 15-4 in 2015.
Cape scoring was led by Mairead Rishko with her first career hat trick, backed up by two-goal efforts from Claire Lopez, Lulu Rishko and Carrie Clausius. Single goals were scored by Lindsay D’Ambrogi, Avary Miller, Grace Wiggins, Ally Diehl and Haley Gamuciello.
Assist leaders were D’Ambrogi and Ally Diehl each with two, and single assists from Lopez, Clausius, Lulu Rishko, Macy Steinwedel, Addy Basile and Mairead Rishko.
Anna Lopez, bound for William & Mary, had six saves in goal. She now has early-season wins over Broadneck and Queen Anne’s.
Cape moves into spring break and will next play back-to-back games Friday and Saturday, April 5 and 6, facing Maryland schools Kent Island and Marriotts Ridge.
Coach Lindsey Underwood: “I was proud of the team. QA is always tough and competitive. We were working on begin scrappy, getting the DC and ground balls coming into the game knowing they would be keys to success, and our kids were able to execute. We also talked a lot about needing multiple goal scorers to keep the QA defense guessing, and we were able to have seven different scorers. We are being tested early in the season. We have Kent Island and Marriotts Ridge at the end of break, which are two very strong teams.”
Notes: Queen Anne’s is 28-5 over the last two seasons and reached the Maryland 2A semifinals in 2023.
