Cape soccer falls to Central, bounces back against Red Lion

May 8, 2022

The Cape soccer team jumped out to a 2-0 lead in its May 5 match with Sussex Central, but the Vikings couldn’t hold on, as the Golden Knights turned on the Bayleigh Perdue show. The senior forward tallied three goals to lead the home team to a 3-2 victory. Perdue has scored the last five goals against the Vikings. She also scored twice in the 2-0 Central win over the Vikings in 2021.

Cape sophomore Shannon Rath opened the scoring for the Vikings at 4:40 off a pass from Josephine Ingerski. Giselle Garcia hit the twine at the 18:15 mark from Laurelee Mobius.

Perdue scored at 18:37, at 33:31 and on a penalty kick at 59:15. Ingrid Chevez and Lareimi Sandoval were credited with assists.

The Vikings outshot the Knights 25-9. Central goalkeeper Kathy Sanchez stopped 23 shots, while Cape’s Brianna Burrell saved six. The Vikings garnered a 7-1 edge in corners.

Cape had a chance to tie on a penalty kick, but Garcia’s shot hit the crossbar and bounced away from the goal.

“The Central game was frustrating, as we watched film and put a plan in place that we trained in practice,” said Cape head coach Patrick Kilby. “We outplayed them, outshot them and created far more chances. We couldn’t execute. I told the girls we didn’t lose the game because they were the better team or because we had a lack of effort; it was simply that we could not execute.”

On a day more suited to ducks than Vikings or Lions, Cape bounced back with a 3-1 victory over Red Lion Christian Academy May 7.

Cape outshot the Red Lions 13-4 and held a 11-0 edge in corner kicks.

Ingerski opened the scoring at the 17-minute mark off an assist from Garcia. Samantha Hunker hit the twine at the 39-minute mark from Mobius. Garcia scored unassisted at 44 minutes. Red Lion’s Mackenzie Skelton scored the lone goal for the Lions.

Burrell stopped three shots.

“This was a game that we needed, and the girls came out in less-than-ideal conditions and earned the result,” Kilby said. “We were able to give some girls a much-needed rest as we managed minutes for some of our heavy hitters. It was a solid team win, and hopefully it will get us back on track.”

Cape moves to 7-4 on the season, while Sussex Central moves to 5-3-1 and Red Lion is 5-6-1.
