July 18, 2024

A Democratic primary for the Sussex County Council District 3 seat will not take place as Dana Paskins withdrew from the race July 15.

That means that Democrat Jane Gruenebaum will face Republican incumbent Mark Schaeffer in the general election.

Paskins provided the following statement: “I permanently suspended my candidacy July 15 due to recent personal issues that required my immediate attention. I am humbled and thankful for each and everyone's support during my candidacy. While suspending my campaign was an extremely hard decision to make, please know that after I deal with this personal issue, I will continue to work for Sussex County.”

District 3 includes the Delaware Bay and Atlantic coast communities in northeastern Sussex County, including the Broadkill Beach, Dewey Beach, Henlopen Acres, Lewes, Long Neck, Primehook Beach, Rehoboth Beach, and Slaughter Beach areas.

There will be a Republican primary for the District 1 seat held by Mike Vincent since 2008. He is being challenged by Matt Lloyd and Christie Shirey. District 1 includes southwestern portions of Sussex County, including the Bethel, Blades, Delmar, Laurel, and Seaford areas.

In District 2, incumbent Republican Cindy Green is being challenged by Republican Steve McCarron. Green was first elected in 2020. District 2 includes the northwestern portions of Sussex County, including the Bridgeville, Ellendale, Greenwood, Lincoln, Milford, and Milton areas.
