Police warn of checkout skimmers at Wawa stores in Rehoboth, Lewes
The Delaware State Police said skimming devices were found at Wawa self-checkout kiosks in Rehoboth, Lewes and Millsboro stores, affecting anyone who made charges between Aug. 31 and Sept. 14.
Police said the skimmers were found at the following Wawas:
- 30155 Veterans Way, Rehoboth Beach
- 35436 Wolfe Neck Road, Rehoboth
- 17663 Dartmouth Drive, Lewes
- 24930 John J. Williams Highway, Millsboro.
Anyone who completed transactions at the locations between Aug. 31 and Sept. 14 should review banking or credit card accounts for any fraudulent transactions, police said.
Police offered the following tips to raise awareness of the skimming devices:
- Check for a camera, as it could be used to record the PINs being entered, and avoid using the debit payment option where PINs are required
- Tap-to-pay is currently the most secure method of payment, followed by the EMV chip payment method
- Check for signs of tampering
- Pull on the card slot and wiggle the keypad, since the skimming devices are usually placed directly over the actual slot
- Anyone who finds a possible skimming device should notify the business management
- Monitor banking or credit accounts for fraudulent transactions
- Report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.
