Rotary Club of Lewes-Rehoboth Beach collected donations from individuals and businesses for 500 American flags as part of its Flags for Heroes project.

A ceremony took place at 11 a.m., Nov. 11, on Veterans Day to highlight the project.

Money is used to support community organizations and provide scholarships. Last year, the club returned $90,000 to the community.

The flags are on display along Kings Highway in front of the the Cape Henlopen School District office and high school.

Taking part in the ceremony were guest speaker, Dr. David Tam, Beebe Healthcare president and CEO; Jenny Nauman, Cape Henlopen School District assistant superintendent; Lewes Police Chief Thomas Spell; Sussex County Councilman Mark Schaeffer; Pete Booker, Rotary master of ceremonies; the Rev. Harry Hiltner, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church; and WRDE Coast TV meteorologist Paul Williams.

Cape Chorale of Cape Henlopen High School, under director Marian Sunnergren, provided music.

A moment of silence was held for the late Ted Becker, former Lewes mayor, who was a veteran who supported the project.
