Art For a Purpose provides funds for Cape Region nonprofits

April 28, 2012

Art for a Purpose, a Midge Smith Fine Art Gallery in Lewes, recently sold six works of art that generated funds for five nonprofit organizations, four of which are locally based: Lewes Canalfront Park, the Rehoboth Art League, the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society, and the Rehoboth Beach Film Society. An original oil on canvas painted by Jean Curtis provided funds for the fifth nonprofit - the Delaware Humane Association based in Wilmington.

“We are thoroughly enjoying the partnerships we have formed with these and other deserving local nonprofits,” said Smith. “It’s very rewarding to operate as a conduit for artwork to change hands, be enjoyed by new owners, and to direct the proceeds to organizations doing good work in our communities.”

In addition to partnering with nonprofits, Art for a Purpose is proud of its continuing relationship with Kathleen Schell and the team at the Ocean Atlantic Sotheby’s International Realty office at 102 Savannah Road in Lewes. They have permitted the walls of their office to be an extension of the gallery’s space. At the current time, 20 art objects can be seen there, including nine antique paintings with very ornate, heavy wood gold frames.

Self-guided tours are available at any time the office is open; on weekends that is Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m;. Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

More than 60 paintings and sculpture can be seen upstairs at Art for a Purpose Gallery,  Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.

The nonprofit organization accepts works of art directly from donors, sells the art, and then distributes proceeds of the sales directly to charitable organizations for their unrestricted use. The gallery has an unusual, eclectic assortment of high-quality art donated by art collectors from across the country. Included are a variety of media (e.g., oil, acrylic, watercolor, photography; various print techniques; sculpture; and other) produced by artists since the 1860s, including a collection of eight signed works by the Russian-born French artist Erté. There is sufficient variety to fit most every interest, décor and price range.
