Cape boys’ lax beats Sussex Academy 21-2 to open state tournament

The Cape boys’ lacrosse team opened state tournament play at home May 25, beating Sussex Academy 21-2. The survive-and-drive postseason for the fifth-seeded Vikings resumes Saturday, May 28, as the beach boys leave home for a quarterfinal game at Delaware Military Academy, which can only be found with a talking GPS and a navigator riding shotgun. 

The Vikings surged early against Sussex Academy, scoring five unanswered goals from five different players, and by halftime, the score was 18-1. Cape ran the roster in the second half. 

Cape goal scoring was led by Mikey Frederick with six goals, Hank D’Ambrogi and Burke Healy with three each, Luke Burton and Jahden Cannon with two apiece and single goals from Joe Coveleski, Jack Schell, C.J. Fritchman, Brexton Carter and Thomas Gibbs.

Assists for Cape were Mike Guenther and D’Ambrogi with two apiece, and Burton, Cannon and Healy each with one. 

Goal scorers for the Seahawks were Ryan Morgan and Brenner Short.

Goalie saves for Cape were Evan Erhardt and Michael Sposato each with two. Sussex Academy’s Mason Trench collected seven saves, while Jackson Hagy had five.  

Saturday’s quarterfinal games in the upper bracket include Wilmington Friends at Archmere and Cape Henlopen at DMA. The  winners will meet Wednesday, June 1, in the semifinals.

In the bottom bracket, Appoquinimink plays at Salesianum, while Caesar Rodney plays at Sanford. The winners will play June 1 in the semifinals.
