Cape boys’ lax tames DMA 19-2, will play Archmere in semifinals
The survive-and-drive E-ZPass to the state finals continued for the Cape boys’ lacrosse team May 28, after the fifth-seeded Vikings swept away No. 4 Delaware Military Academy 19-2. Cape led the Seahawks 13-0 at halftime.
“We always show up ready to play, home or away,” said coach Mark D’Ambrogi. “We’ll be back up here playing in the semifinals Wednesday, so that’s a good thing.”
Cape will play top-seeded Archmere at 5:30, Wednesday, June 1, at Abessinio Stadium. The Auks reached the semis with a 14-7 win over Wilmington Friends in the quarterfinals.
The second half of the doubleheader has Salesianum, a 20-0 winner over Appoquinimink, facing Sanford, a 23-5 winner over Caesar Rodney in the quarterfinals.
Cape’s C.J. Fritchman dominated the face-off circle, winning 14 of 17, while Mikey Frederick ripped the net for six first-half goals. Luke Burton added four goals, joined by Joe Coveleski with three, Jack Schell with two and single goals from Hank D’Ambrogi, Cody Trivits, Thomas Gibbs and Eddie Houck.
D’Ambrogi had four assists, while Frederick, Burton, Schell, Jahden Cannon, Trivits and John Huss each had one.
Evan Erhardt and Michael Sposato combined for nine saves.
“We played smart today with a lot of assisted goals,” coach D’Ambrogi said. “C.J. did a good job getting us possessions, and we were able to keep the ball moving. They mixed up zone and man-to-man, and we did a good job recognizing the open man in both defenses.”
Notes: A weird announcement 10 minutes before game time. “The game will not begin in the interest of safety until all Cape fans go to the bleachers on the other side of the field.” The Cape fans were mostly parents and grandparents, as few students made the trip north for the 11:30 a.m. game. Cape played Archmere twice in 2019, winning in the regular season 16-7 and in the semifinals 16-9. Archmere last beat Cape in 2016 by a score of 11-7.
“Archmere is always well coached with good players, and they are the top seed in this year's tournament. We look forward to the chance to play them Wednesday,” coach D'Ambrogi said.
