May 4, 2022

Salesianum lacrosse saw the storm coming May 3, after a silent Mikey Frederick snapped for two goals to tie the game at 11-11 with 6:30 left to play.

But Sallies responded with two goals of its own and milked the clock in the final minutes to escape Cape with a 13-11 victory. Both Salesianum and Cape Henlopen have emerged as major players in the Philadelphia hub of talent where Salesianum is ranked No. 2 and Cape sits at No. 10.

“We made some really good plays and brought a lot of effort throughout the whole game,” said Cape coach Mark D’Ambrogi. “We made mistakes that allowed them extra possessions and led directly to a few of their goals. We have to work to correct those mistakes and work at playing more consistent lacrosse over the course of an entire game.”

The Vikings trailed 8-5 at the half after Sallies outscored Cape 5-1 in the second quarter. In fact, Cape led Sallies 5-3 to start the second period; then Saliesianum ran off five straight goals to take an 8-5 lead.

Cape goals were scored by Hank D’Ambrogi with three; Frederick, Luke Burton and Jack Schell each with two; and Mike Geunther and Joe Coveleski with one apiece. D’Ambrogi had four assists, while Frederick had one.

Salesianum goals were scored by Caelan Driggs with four, Rowyn Nurry with three, and two goals each from Charles Ruoss, Griffin McGovern and Brayden McMahon. Driggs and Ruoss each had an assist.

Cape goalie Evan Erhardt had 12 saves, while Ryder Sellers of Sallies had nine saves.

C.J. Fritchman won 13 of 23 face-offs for Cape.

“I think our kids are great kids and work hard for each other,” coach D’Ambrogi said. “Our goal now is to get better each day, and tomorrow is an opportunity to do that.”
