Cape boys’ lax runs clock on Tower Hill in 19-4 win

Hank D’Ambrogi’s five goals, seven assists lead the way
April 24, 2022

The Tower Hill boys’ lacrosse team took to DeGroat Field undefeated and in the zone April 23. The Hillers were without leading scorer and captain Brendan Hickey, who was out with a strained hamstring.

Tower Hill scored first and the local crowd was hyped. Top-tier lacrosse athletes from Salesianum and Sanford were in the stands waiting for the showdown to go down.

By halftime, the score was 15-1 in favor of Cape. The Vikings throttled down in the second half to win 19-4.

“Today, it took us a few possessions to get comfortable with their zone defense,” said coach Mark D’Ambrogi. “But once we moved the ball quickly, our opportunities opened up and guys did a good job shooting the ball. We had 15 goals off assists, so it was an unselfish effort today.”

Cape got it going with C.J. Fritchman, who has been taking face-offs since middle school and is one of the top wrestlers in the state.

“C.J. did a great job winning face-offs, so we got a bunch of possessions in a row, and with those chances, we began to find open guys,” D’Ambrogi said.

Scoring goals for Cape were Hank D’Ambrogi with five; Mikey Frederick, Jack Schell and Luke Burton each with three; Fritchman with two, and single goals from Cody Trivitts, Burke Healy and Joe Coveleski.

Assists were D’Ambrogi with seven, Frederick with three, Trivitts with two, and singles from Coveleski, Schell and Burton.

Tower Hill goals were scored by Eddie Nance with two, and single goals from Charles Friz and Bo Gravuer.

Jack Vella, Gravuer and Nance had assists for the Hillers.

Cape goalies Evan Erhardt and Michael Sposato combined for six saves.

Coale Crouch had 14 saves for Tower Hill.

Cape will play at Caesar Rodney at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 27. The Vikings varsity team will host the Hill School (Pa.) at 6:30 p.m., Friday, April 29. The junior varsity squad will play McKean at 4:30 p.m.

“Our next game at Caesar Rodney, we should have plenty of motivation. It's always an emotional game,” D’Ambrogi said.

The Riders are 5-4, which includes losses to Sanford 17-5 and Salesianum 19-4.

Cape improved to 6-1 on the season.
